Fun With Facts

agerowe54

Welcome to a great edition of fun with facts. I was drinking my first cup of coffee this morning which sometimes inspires me to do great things, like brew a second cup of coffee. Between cups I happened to glance over at Judy’s world globe. It is pretty cool because it has two colored lights inside, one to highlight geographical boundaries, the other to distinguish between ocean and land mass. I began to notice there was a lot more water toward the bottom of the globe than at the top.

Could water actually be heavier than dirt and rock? No, of course not, I convinced myself finally, as all through school I was taught that gravity pulls everything toward the center of the earth, not the South Pole. But what if there is some maniacal scheme to change that. What if someone has devised a way to draw all the water to the southern hemisphere and keep it all for themselves.

Did you know that 68% of all land mass is north of the equator? Putting that in simple terms for my simple mind, that is roughly 2 acres up north versus 1 acre in the south. Also keep in mind that 60% of the northern hemisphere’s surface is water. We all know there is dirt and rock and fish poo way down deep.

But all that being said, that leaves only 32% of all land mass in the southern hemisphere. That’s a lot of beachfront property. And if you are looking for some cheap beachfront property, the best sales are currently in Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. Good luck! Anyway, how many people live north of the equator? I thought it would be like, uh, 68%. No. Two separate resources estimated up to 90% of the world’s population lives in the northern hemisphere, which includes Dade County, where half of them must live. Ever try to find a parking space? Your best chance is on I-95 during rush hour.

So…. what that means is that 10% of the people share 32% of the land down under and a whole lot of water! I won’t pretend to understand why that is, but if 100% of the koala and kangaroo population lives there, it can’t be all bad. Right?

Should we all pack up the kids and head south?

After all, 100,000 koalas and 42.8 million roos can’t be all wrong, unless I’m “off me rockah!” More facts! The average temperature in the northern hemisphere is 60 degrees while in the land down under, it is only 56 degrees. I don’t have the time or degree credentials to explain that, but it is totally opposite of what I would have expected. What I DO know is that there are certain creepy crawly things that would keep me from moving out of Maine, let alone to a place where two-thirds of the snakes and frogs are venomous.

EEEEwwwwwwwwwwwwww! I will take my black flies...thank you!

I guess at the end of the day, it is good and healthy to wonder. And you can do it by sitting with a nice cup of freshly brewed coffee and a curiosity!

Joe Alpaca says, “While wondering is wonderful, wandering can get you lost. Look what happened to Chris Columbus. Gaze around you but never give up a good parking spot during tourist season in search of a better one.”

Peace Out!
